Brendan

I grew up as the poor, gifted kid in Lowell, Michigan. In high school, I got free lunch during the day and spent my afternoons and evenings tutoring, at robotics, or otherwise trying not to be home. I started at Michigan Technological University (MTU) in the Fall of 2019, and quickly switched majors to Scientific and Technical Communication. After needing to leave early a couple semesters, I moved to Houghton full time to commit fully to getting my degree—which also meant working 40+ hours a week during my gap year and gathering documentation and letters of support for FAFSA Independent Status.

During the past few years, I quit my job at Walmart and found work at Keweenaw Learning Center, the Writing Center at MTU, and a local coffee shop/music venue. I picked up minors in Ethics and Philosophy and Psychology, and I got a summer research grant to interview people on food stamps about their experience and starting a support group out of my apartment. I will be attending Grand Valley State University in the fall to pursue a Master’s in Social Work.
